Exploring the impact of political dynamics on firm behavior

This project at the University of St. Gallen aims to investigate whether and how European firms react to political shifts. We will study manufacturing firms' decisions to bring back production facilities from China to their home country (reshoring) or to nearby allied countries (near- or friendshoring). To this end, we will create a dataset of companies' China activities over a 20-year period, and conduct interviews with company representatives to map motivations behind relocation decisions. Finally, we aim to update the theoretical framework for understanding firms' relocation decisions.

We also aim to synthesize our findings into actionable business and policy insights and make them available for practitioners (see “For Practitioners”).
